Corrections for known variable stars

Last update: 30 November 2013

The Dauban Survey has detected a large number of variable stars (about 500) which are very close but distinct from a known variable.

In the majority of cases, this has a simple explanation:
  1. the known variable has been detected by a wide field survey with limited astrometric accuracy (such as ASAS, NSVS..). The coordinates are pointing at a significant distance from the variable. Fortunately there is a single bright star in the area, so there is no ambiguity on the variable identity. The Dauban Survey gives the opportunity to correct the coordinates.
  2. the known variable has been detected by a wide field survey with limited astrometric accuracy (such as ASAS, NSVS..) such that the official coordinates point in the middle of a group of star. There is no star at the exact official position. The Dauban Survey has detected which star is varying.
  3. there are two very close stars, and there is a mistake on the identity of the true variable in the official databases. The Dauban Survey has detected the true variable.
Here is a list of corrections that have been accepted by the AAVSO.
